No Shave November

This past month we had a contest, through our Propaganda Facebook Group, to see who could not shave for the entire month of November. Thanks to everyone who accepted the challenge. Most didn’t make it, including myself, but a few did. The brave and strong. The hairy.
Since deciding a winner was too hard, we put everyones name in a hat and drew for the winner. A shout out to Rob Demman for the thickest beard and Dylan Ranney for… well a good try.

UBCO Varsity Outdoors Club Host’s Largest Fundraiser in Club History!
On Wednesday, October 29, 2008 the UBCO Varsity Outdoors Club Okanagan (VOCO) held their first annual fundraiser at the Kelowna Community Theater were they showed the Teton Gravity Research movie premier “Under the Influence”. The show turned out to be a great success for the club, in that they raised over $3000! The theater has a capacity of 860 people and VOCO sold close to 500 tickets for the show, which is a great turn out for a first-time event. Hopefully next year we can draw in a larger crowd wince they’ve had a flavor of what TGR has to offer; steep n’ deep backcountry exploration.
With the proceeds raised we hope to purchase new club gear, offer discounts to club members on safety courses and plan more club trips to groovy locations around the Okanagan and B.C.
Club members involved with organizing the TGR event worked their asses off and should be recognized for their contributions, time and energy on this event: Neil Shroder, Brody Granger, Dylan Cunningham, Heather Buckingham, Dave Donnelly, Samantha Brett, Nick Therrien, Hilton Bryne, Brook Bailey, Yannik Letailleur, Jennifer Klimchuck, and Ben Glassco (for being our amazing MC). Sorry if I missed anyone.
Along with individual volunteers, the TGR event wouldn’t have been complete without local sponsors. A special thanks to these following shops: Venture Gear Bikes and Backcountry, Fresh Air Experience, Deviate Boardshop, Freeride Boardshop, Kelowna Kayak and Outdoors Inc., Island Snow, Big White and Silver Star Resort, Revelstoke Mountain Resort and Monashee Snowcats. Without the generous donations from these amazing sponsors, we wouldn’t have been able to provide the public with the sweet prizes that we did, including a 2 day cat-skiing trip for two in the Monashee Mountains and much more!
Lastly we would like to thank those of you who supported the event by purchasing tickets and coming out to support your local university and community! The theater was pumping with energy from the crowd as people lunged for prizes and swag, and nothing but smiles were worn on people’s faces as they walked out of the theater. It was good to see some familiar faces out there, so please spread the word next year when this event is back in town!

Comprised of professional and well-recognized cinematographers, producers, directors and athletes, TGR has broken ground on all levels of modern action-film footage. TGR will expose viewers to the most sought-after ski and snowboard destinations around the world, leaving you wanting more powder and adrenaline than ever before! “Under the Influence” captures the talents of Jeremy Jones, Seth Morrison and B.C’s own Kye Petersen, Victoria Jealouse and friends, as they shred big-mountain and park terrain. Since 1996, TGR’s annual ski and snowboard films have been premiered and sold out in over 150 locations around the world, including North America, Japan, and Europe, with a total of 18 international acclaimed and award-winning films. UBCO is fueled up and ready to bring in the most desired and epic ski and snowboard film of the season, right to your doorstep! We, the UBCO Varsity Outdoors Club Okanagan (VOCO), are hosting the one and only premier of this film within the entire Okanagan Valley. We have $4500 worth of prizes to give away, including day-passes to Revelstoke Mountain Resort, a long board, some new Burton snowboard bindings, a free weekend of Cat-skiing and much more! This event is a fundraiser for the Varsity Outdoors Club at UBCO, and will use all proceeds towards new club gear, safety training (avalanche and first aid courses, ect), and group trips through out the year. Pancake Breakfast hosted by Joeys Global Grill

The Kelowna Community Food Bank is hosting a pancake breakfast at Joeys Global Grill on August 23rd from 8:30 until 10am. All the money raised from ticket sales will be given to the Food Bank to help meet the needs of the community. The Food Bank has grown from serving 600 people in 1983 to currently serving over 30,000. The Food Bank relies on donations from the community as it is not government funded. Unfortunately, donations have not been meeting demand and the Food Bank has had to go to the Calgary location to help replenish its stock. The pancake breakfast is a fundraising event with a goal of selling 200 tickets at approximately $10 each in order to raise $2,000. Please come down and enjoy pancakes, fresh fruit salad, bacon, coffee and orange juice and help support our local Food Bank.

Modern PurAir has 3 old HVAC cleaning trucks that they need to sell. Before they sell them, they want artists to paint them! The company is giving a cash prize to the top artist on each truck at the end of the day.

Entry:
Everyone is eligible: rookies and famous artists, bad boy taggers, random people that want to paint.
Rules:
Each artist has about an 18X18 inch square to paint on the truck.
Artists can use whatever medium they want.
Each artist has from 11am to 3pm to complete their square, but can use any amount of time they want.
Each square will be numbered, and the crowd on-hand will judge the final 3 paintings at the end.
