Lavan Press Release

June 23, 2009

Big City Swagger

After some ruthless criminals ran sacked Lavan head quarters at the end of 08 and countless production errors, the fresh Lavan produce has finally arrived. This year’s line sees some fresh new designs as well as a few popular carry over designs from last year. We’ve also introduced the use of water based inks on a lot of our designs this year, which helps keep mother Earth happy.

Lavan Apparel is a clothing company that focuses on mountain biking but make designs that everyone will enjoy.  Lavan is more than looking good and getting rad. We design and produce our products locally with a conscious effort to use printing practises that are less damaging to our environment such as the water based inks. We also give back to an organization or charity each year, this year’s being Athletes for Africa (for more info check out our website.)  Lavan has supported some fairly hot names in the bicycle world such as: Casey Groves, Eric Lawrenuk, Luke Fulton and Brendan Howey; as well as being a proud sponsor of the Goatstyle Bike Competition since day one.

The 09 team consists of all returning family members – Andrew Sherry, Dustin Greenall, Dylan Dunkerton, Stevie Smith and Travis Bilton – and one that is still to be determined.  A B-team has recently been launched and so far features Anthony Evans and Colton King.

Kelowna, BC, May 26, 2009 – Picture an ultra chic, Las Vegas penthouse – cut right out of the Hard Rock Hotel – and hung high above Lake Okanagan’s deep waters.

Vantage West Realty recently listed a home fit for a rock star in Sunset Waterfront Resort just down from Prospera Place. Kelowna has seen an emergence in style – exemplified in this custom-designed 3,750 square foot double suite, originally built in 2006 and listed for the first time since construction.

“This is a special property that combines the best of both worlds,” said AJ Hazzi, Director of Vantage West Realty. “This is a unique opportunity to show people that Kelowna has more than one speed – and properties that capture all the style and glamour of the world’s most exciting cities.”

The view from this Sunset Drive residence encompasses all of Kelowna’s traditional beauty – an
unobstructed view of Lake Okanagan, picturesque mountains and glorious sunsets. But the vision
inside this newly listed property is something rarely seen in the interior of British Columbia – a glimpse of Las Vegas flash, with an ostrich-leather pool table, fused glass and metallic flooring and eight flat-screen televisions.

A rising percentage of high-end homeowners are turning to Vantage West to find and move the type of places that cater to a very specific home-buyer. They’ve been a beacon of change – focusing on being responsive to the demands of a style migration that’s been sweeping the city.

Kelowna is attracting interesting and successful people from around the world – entrepreneurs,
professional athletes and high-profile celebrities who appreciate the region’s natural beauty. With
international style and flair gaining hold in the Valley, the value of a property like 1902-1128 Sunset Drive is on the rise.

Style has come to Kelowna – and its here to stay.

Zillions of ideas…

So as you can see it is kind of hard to put all of this into one sentence.

Q: This isn’t like an all-inclusive escort service right?
Ingrid: Funny. I guess I could, but no.

Q: What is your background?
Ingrid: I’m originally from the Netherlands, but I have lived in the USA for 9 years and now I live in Kelowna.

Q: What did you do in Holland?
Ingrid: I managed several flower stores and took that opportunity to get involved in artwork, designing, renovating and decorating. Flower arranging was just not enough for the many interests I have.

Q: What are some of the most interesting projects you’ve done for people?
Ingrid: Well I have done a lot of reorganizing jobs; those are always great because it really changes people’s lives. Room makeovers are very rewarding because I always like to make the makeovers very personal…and of course that touches people. I helped one client put her whole house back together after it was hit by a hurricane. It was great to have a team of people to work with who made her place into a home again.
Another highlight was helping a couple (that I had only met once) clean their home will they were gone for 3 months. They gave me permission to do whatever I thought was needed so I ended up completely redoing their entire house. I painted walls & ceilings, organized the entire kitchen, purchased new towels, bedding etc. You name it, I did it. Well, they came back and that was truly one of the most touching moments of my life. We ended up working together for a long time and I became their personal assistant and friend.
Q: What have you done recently?
Ingrid: I completely renovated my own home when I moved to Kelowna and I helped my sister and brother in-law with all their closets in their beautiful home. I built shelves in about 10 closets.

Q: So it sounds like you can really do anything. What’s your specialty?
Ingrid: Oh, I don’t know. Finding creative ways to make things very functional.

Q: What do you love most about your work?
Ingrid: The variety; my days are never the same. I could be driving one day, shopping the next, building on the 3rd day, and making a meal for 20 people on the next. I love it.

Q: What do you charge?
Ingrid: Well, we will have to talk about that.

Q: What’s the best way to contact you?
Ingrid: Phone – 250.448.9989

Postman’s Nightmare

March 9, 2009

When Neil Postman warned in the 1990s against an intrusive and all- consuming Internet, he was merely predicting the advent of Web 2.0. If Postman were alive today, he would be horrified by the Web “technopoly” that has emerged during this decade. The advent of social networking has presented a contemporary Faustian bargain: privacy is sacrificed for membership in a larger social sphere.
Inclusion into a social sphere is the user’s driving factor in belonging to many social networking sites such as Facebook. The concept of always knowing what is going on within one’s social community has led to the creation of a culture of surveillance. Instead of engaging in “real time” social interaction to see what happened after a long weekend, people merely go onto Facebook to see how many pictures their friends have been tagged in, and see what was written on their wall; a timeline of the weekend’s events can then be easily created. Social activities aren’t the only information disclosed to Facebook. Everything from relationship status – by stating single, in a relationship, or married, to political affiliations, through self-labeling or by joining politically charged groups – can be expressed.
Some may question the problems to this social integration, as certainly it has utility. An example could be finding likeminded people on campus. Simply clicking on your political affiliation will bring up a list of people with similar views. Constant utilizing of these social applications, however, creates a dependence, as social skills once used before are rendered obsolete. This then leads to a near Technopoly with the creation of the social web through the merger of these networking sites and the social life of an individual.
Faust exchanged his soul to the devil for a constant supply of youthful energy. Arguably, as Postman warned, the technopoly surrounding social networking has sold society’s collective soul of privacy in a Faustian bargain for the promise of a more fulfilling social experience. One should stop and analyze what exactly is the cost of this pact with the devil incarnate. Has the emergent culture of surveillance made us lose our desire to privacy?  Have we become dependent on a web application to fuel our social life?

One would hope that a pragmatic thinker such as Postman could see the inheret benefits of social networking, just as he would surely see the pitfalls. If social networking sites are used as they were intended – to help people socialize – technology could easily be considered a hero here, but as is the case with any technology, it can also be abused.
